Virgin Island is a small uninhabited island a few kilometers off the shores of Panglao. The locals call it Puntod Island. Until recently, this island with attached S-shaped sandbar is not known to tourists. Even to this day, only a handful of tourists go there. But for those who know, the shallow pristine waters around the small island is a big draw.

The view from this island is just spectacular. Just across the horizon is the Panglao Island and on the other side is the beautiful Bohol Straits. A visit to this picturesque island is a must especially if you go island hopping. A BBQ here for lunch after a tiring dolphin watching and snorkeling in Balicasag is just so refreshing.

How to Get to Virgin Island

Getting there is easy. From the shores of Panglao, you can hire a boat to bring you to the island. If you are visiting Balicasag Island, you can ask your boatman to visit the island. It usually costs an additional fee but you can haggle for the price. The island is just about 20 minutes away from Balicasag.

As the island is uninhabited, there are no commercial facilities. There are, however, some vendors hawking their wares(perals, beads, shark teeth, etc.) It may be a bit annoying for some visitors because a few of the vendors are quite pushy. But if you happen to visit the island, you can just politely tell the vendors that you are not interested.

Rajah Sikatuna National Park or otherwise known as Rajah Sikatuna Protected Landscape (RSPL) as renamed recently by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, is the widest remaining patch of forest in Bohol province. It was declared a national park in July, 1987 under the proclamation No. 129. The vast forest covers the towns of Bilar, Valencia, Carmen, Sierra Bullones, Garcia Hernandez, Dimiao and Batuan.

Of the total 9,023 hectares, more than half is made up of natural forests. About 1,600 hectares is covered by the so called man-made forest while there are 690 hectares occupied for habitation and the rest is subject for rehabilitation. The primary objectives of the Rajah Sikatuna Protected Landscape include source of potable water and irrigation, biodiversity reserve and eco-tourism. The man made forest is very popular among tourists with its cool breeze and spectacular view of the rice fields below and parts of the Chocolate hills in Carmen.

Activities in RSPL includes the following:

Birding at Rajah Sikatuna National Park

Birding is probably the most popular activity in this reserve for tourists. What makes this reserve popular for bird watchers is the high possibility of seeing a number of threatened and restricted-range species in the area plus the easy access to the birds’ habitat via an extensive network of good trails that cut through the nature park. In fact, bird watchers regard the Rajah Sikatuna Protected Landscape as the ‘top Philippine birding’ site.

Butterfly Sanctuary

The Simply Butterflies Conservation Center is a private entity inside the area of jurisdiction of the Rajah Sikatuna Protected Landscape. The center seeks to protect and strengthen the natural environment of the butterflies through plant research, breeding and releasing. Tourists can buy butterfly themed souvenirs in the centre.

Trails

There’s quite a number of trails in the nature reserve for the adventurous. A three hour trek to the top of

the mountain will rewarded by a breathtaking view of the surrounding area. Tarsiers can be found here in the wild and there are trails just for that. There’s also a few species of monkeys here who made the woodlands of the park as their home. Watch out for these friendly animals as they might steal your food, hat, or whatever have you.

Caves

Adventurers like caves and there’s plenty of them in this park. There are 130 caves already mapped within the reserve as well as limestone formations, providing geological value to the park. 37 caves are found in six barangays of Sierra Bullones, and these caves have been mapped by local residents. These caves are now being used for adventure ecotourism and as show caves. The caves are the habitats of some bat species.

Hanging Bridge

A hanging bridge, way over a stream, is within the Park premises. The bridge is made up of bamboo poles only.

Adventurers will enjoy crossing the bridge with only one bamboo pole as foothold. On the bridge, the view of the Park’s rugged terrain and the winding stream below is breathtaking.

Logarita Spring

Take a dip at the refreshing waters of the swimming pool in Logarita. This pool is fed by the natural spring at the foot of the Rajah Sikatuna Nature Reserve.

Accomodation

A hostel is available if one plans to stay overnight. The hostel is small with only three double rooms which can be had at P50 a night. There’s a birder’s and visitor’s logbook in the hostel. The birder’s logbook is very informative and contains a list of birds that have made the park their habitat.

A number of chalets are available at Camp Magsaysay, a Scout Camp and Nature Center. these chalets to have very basic facilities such as beds, toilet and water.

For those seeking for a better accommodation, the Chocolate Hills Hotel is just a few minutes away. It is situated in the town of Carmen with a view deck to see the magnificent chocolate hills.

How to Get There (Rajah Sikatuna Protected Landscape)

Rajah Sikatuna National Park is located at Logarita, Bilar, Bohol. Bilar is an interior town located 41

kilometers Northeast of Tagbilaran City, the lone city of Bohol. You can take bus (St. Jude bus) from Dao

Terminal at Tagbilaran City which will take you to Bilar Market. From the market, you can hire a “habal-habal”

(motorcycle taxi) which will take you to the park’s headquarters at Logarita.

One of the famous tourist spots for locals in Bohol is the Logarita Spring in the Municipality of Bilar. It’s a natural spring with water coming from the mountains of Raja Sikatuna Nature Reserve. The reserve is actually the largest remaining tract of natural forest left in Bohol. The spring itself is surrounded by indigenous forest, varieties of plants and wildlife. The water from the spring is so refreshing, cool and crystal clear.

There’s a swimming pool fed by the cool waters of the spring. It is situated on a clearing surrounded by tall Mahogany and other hardwood trees. Small native thatched cottages are provided to give shade to the bathers. This made the place very popular and a favorite nook for the locals. Birding enthusiasts usually take a dip here before or after going through the nearby park.

Logarita Spring is about 2 hours away from Tagbilaran City by bus. However, there’s a lot of other tourist spots along the way that will make your trip enjoyable.

Another must-visit and experience activity in Bohol is the Loboc River Cruise. It’s a very popular destination because more than its floating restaurants and their food, one will be treated with the magnificent and breathtaking view of the Loboc River and its surroundings. The very clean river is complemented with green landscapes and tall coconut trees against a backdrop of a forest.

Loboc is around 24kms away from Tagbilaran and it’s one of the iterenaries of most, if not all, Bohol Tour Packages. On your way here from the city, you’ll pass by several other places of interests like the Sandugo Shrine and the Loboc Church which is the home of the award-winning Loboc Children’s Choir.

There are two choices fo the river cruise. One is via a banca(canoe) where boatmen will take you to the cascading mini waterfall of Busay. Another, which is more popular, is boarding the floating restaurant new the Loay bridge where they are stationed. Food here was fine and plenty and features local delicacies. While cruising and eating your sumptous buffet, a band will serenade you. Guests are also invited to sing if they like to.

The river cruise ends at the Busay Falls. It’s about one and a half meter high and it marks the point where the floating restaurant cannot go any further. You’ll stop at this point for a while to allow the guest to appreciate the landscape.

If you are lucky, the boat may stop at a tribal community along the banks of the river (not all boats stop here). You will be welcomed by the music of the Ati Tribe of Bohol. Here, tourists can mingle with the members of the tribe and they may even teach you how to play archery. The Ati Tribe were very friendly and playful and it’s definitely a very good addition to the attractions. Visiting them is free but a small amount of donation is very welcome to help them and their community.

As of this writing, the Loboc Floating Restaurant Cruise costs PHP280 per head plus a municipal tax of PHP30. The amount already includes a buffet lunch and of course, the boat rental. The entire trip takes between 45 and 60 minutes.

Another favorite tourist spot for adventures is the Mag-Aso falls in the municipality of Antequera. It can be reached within 30 minutes from Tagbilaran City. It is about 25 feet tall and situated on anice backdrop of lush greens composed mainly of towering trees. The area where Mag-Aso falls is located The sound of chirping birds, swaying trees, and cascading waters are truly a treat, especially for adventurers who had been used to the metro lifestyle.

There are two ways to get to the falls itself. One is via trekking where it features rough climb which are both challenging and fulfilling. For the less adventurous, you can take the safer route with the concrete steps specially provided for explorers of every kind. It is a convenient passageway to this secluded paradise.

Mag-Aso Falls is seldom included in Bohol Tour packages simply because it is out of way from the usual tourist spots. But with the effort needed to reach the falls, it is highly recommended that a separate day be set aside to visiting Mag-Aso Falls. That will definitely give you more time to explore and appreciate all the things the falls has to offer. A side of the pool is converted into a picnic ground where tables, sheds and seats are provided.

It is especially amazing to take the visit to Mag-Aso Falls when the weather is humid. The cool waters and green canopy will help neutralize the scorching heat from the sun. You will surely feel refreshed after a nice slow and long dip into the cascading cool waters of Mag-Aso Falls.

There’s an entrance fee to the spring which is only PHP20 for adults. There are also picnic tables, huts and cottages for rent with fees ranging from PHP20-120. Though it is not free, the amount you pay is more than worth it specially when you consider how clean the pool is. Boholanos should really be proud of what they did in this area and the maintenance of the site is really commendable. Despite the development made to the site, main attractions like the falls and the spring itself remain untouched.

Aside from the treat of the cool waters of the spring, visitors can also enjoy the sea which is just a few meters away. The adds allure of the adventure at Badiang Springs.

The Cave

Of the roughly 1400 caves that you can find in Bohol, none is more famous than Hinagdanan. Its cavern is about 100 meters long with beautiful rock formations. The stalactites and stalagmites stick out from the ceiling and floor of the cave as though trying to meet each other.

One of the most unique feature of the case are the two eye-like holes found in the ceiling of the cave where light comes in. It gives an eerie and beautiful effect. A lot of people have their pictures taken from this area. Electrical lights has been fitted inside to make its visitors appreciate the cave better and also for safety reasons.

Another attraction inside the cave is its lagoon. The lagoon has glimmering greenish surface that came from the limestone at the bottom of the pool. People used to bath in the lagoon but was recently advised not to do so becaust of karst pollutants in the water. And since the water is almost stagnant, it is believed that it is impure.

How to get to Hinagdanan

Hinagdanan Cave is found in Barangay Bingag, Dauis, Panglao Island, which is just a 5-10 minute ride from Tagbilaran City. It is part of the Bohol Tour Packages but you have to check with the operator first because not all include it because it is out of way. You may need to consult your driver to get you here and when you do, you may also want to visit the old church of Dauis.

For the convenience of its visitors, there are stores and a restaurant outside the cave. They sell souvenirs, snacks and whatnots.

In the 1960′s, a nationwide reforestation program was launched by the Philippine government under then president Diosdado Macapagal. In Bohol, the program was spearheaded by then governor Lino Chatto thousands of Mahogany seedlings were planted on a cleared area of 857 hectares in Bilar and Loboc towns. Fast track to the 21st century, the mahogany seeds planted almost half a century ago has grown into a breathtaking man-made forest.

In your travel from Tagbilaran to the Chocolate Hills in Carmen, you’ll pass this man-made forest in Bilar town. It’s a two-kilometer stretch densely planted with Mahogany trees. When you enter this area, you feel like you are entering another world, one that is refreshing and you can taste and feel the fresh air around you. But this man-made forest is just part of the larger Bohol Forest filled with naturally grown trees of different species and giant ferns lining the road.

Adding to the grandeur of the forest is the road Boholanos call the “tina-i sa manok” (chicken’s intestines) which refers to the winding road up the mountain of Loboc going towards Bilar. Leaving the populated barrios behind, the road up the mountain is steep and on one side, a deep ravine which are all densely forested. The steep and winding road plus the ravine does not hinder the local drivers. They maneuver the road with the agility and speed of experts; a feat acquired thru constant practice.

When you take the Bohol tour, make sure to tell your guide to stop here. When you make your stop here, you’ll feel the abrupt change in temperature especially during summer or hot season. The overhanging trees provides a cool breeze even during the summer season. This mountain area seldom sees the sun shine and most often than not, it rains here. Local folks attribute these to the presence of the dense forest.
